Jeff, sorry for not contacting you, but I forgot to write down your number anywhere I could access it on the trip. Adventure holiday? Bungee jumping or white water rafting? Fuck you. I've driven though LA trafffic.

Many of the people on my friends list are into Role Playing Games and Customisable card games. One of them recently posted that he "needed a do-at-home income-booster." I had the thought that your dungeon crawling and CCG playing may have earned you the skills needed for just such a thing.
For the past year, I have successfully topped my income by playing online poker. There are several poker players that have a background in Magic: The Gathering. One example is Scott Fischman, who won two World Series of Poker events in one year. Another is David Williams, who won two million dollars for a second place finish in the 2005 WSOP, and won another WSOP event this year.
What you have already learned is to play to crush. This is a skill that well carries over to playing poker.
Playing good poker is a matter of two things.
- Finding out when you have the advantage.
- If you have it, pressing it.
These are two simple rules that the majority of poker players do not follow, and you will profit if you do.
Some players think that poker is a game of winning pots, and you should try to win as many as possible. This is what causes these players to be the biggest losers in the game! You see, since they do not want to lose the opportunity to win a pot, they will stick their noses in almost no matter what their cards are. They will call bets with faint hope of winning at the end; after all they could have the best hand or make it! These players will very rarely bet or raise.
These players violate rule 1: Finding out when you have the advantage. If you do not have the best of it, cut your investment and fold. Get off the sinking ship of jack-six off suit before it goes down and takes your money with it.
Not only that, but they also break rule 2: Pressing your advantage. Players who don't ever want to give up a hand are often referred to as calling stations, since they'll call most bets to see the next card, but do not raise or otherwise push the action. Once again, play to crush. If you have the best of it, make sure to get accordingly paid.
On the other side of spectrum are players who hardly ever play a hand. They will meekly fold at the hint of a bet, and only bet themselves once in a blue moon. They'll fold Ace-King in limit hold'em for one bet on the flop if the ace or king doesn't come.
They are not pressing their advantage. They play good hands, but by being scared when they have them, they do not win enough.
Of course, you have the players who will bet at anything and anyone. They press all right, but will lose big pots betting straight into a monster hand. The did not recognise the other player had the advantage.
As gamers, you are already familiar with formulating strategies and counter-strategies. You're not going to just sit down at a table and be an instant shark, but I think the concepts you have learned could well carry over to a game where recognising and countering your opponent's play earns you real money.
If you feel I'm on to something, tell me and I'll try to teach you how to recognise when you have the advantage in future posts on this LJ. Or just tell me to stop blabbering about poker already.

This point has absolutely no point whatsoever other than to show off my new userpic. Oh, and I've won $1100 on poker this year so far, though that's no reliable indicator of how the rest of the year will be.

Today was officially the second worst day of life.
This past week I've been preparing to move into a new rental flat, packing up my life into cardboard boxes.
Thursday I was informed that the wallpaper in my new home needed to be replaced, and I got to pick new wallpaper.
Today, lifting everything I own into a rented car trailer, I try to unload only to find that the flat is still being prepared for work by the carpenters. All the walls were filled with putty and all electrical outlets were removed, so we were not able to place any furniture. In the end, most of the furniture had to be put on the balcony with a tarp on top. The rest of my worldly possessions had to be squeezed into a 32 square foot storage space.
Until this gets sorted out, I'm back to living with my mom and with all my clothes packed up out of reach.

From a lot of people on my friends list:
Take the refrain of a well-known song. Put it through Babelfish in the following manner, then post the results in your LJ for people to guess: English -> German, German -> French, French -> Portuguese, Portuguese -> English.
In order to compensate for the mostly easy songs, I'm using the verses rather than the refrain. OK, 4 and 5 are tough.

As a Swede, I am hesitant to brag. However, I figured if there's ever a place for mindless self indulgence, it's Livejournal, so here goes.
Today, I won $250 playing poker online.
Yes, there was a lot of luck involved. I caught some breaks in hands where I was an underdog. That's not to say poker is all luck - otherwise there wouldn't be professional poker players. What probably helped me more than luck was patience. The World Poker Tour and World Series of Poker TV shows are quite misleading when it comes to how the game is really played. The shows are edited for excitement, so you only get to see the big hands. You miss the routine 95% of hands that you end up playing 95% of the time.
Another thing that makes poker on TV misrepresent the game is how the shows are focused on the final parts of the game. When you are at the final table, play is quite different from earlier in the tournament. You know you're pretty much guaranteed to make money, which changes the play. There are fewer people at the table, which changes the play significantly. When there are ten people at the table, you need hands. It's a rare occurrence at a ten-handed table that someone doesn't have a great hand. In circumstances like that, bluffing is suicide. When you're down to the last final few, play gets more aggressive. And, of course, playing in a tournament is an altogether different beast from normal games when you sit down at a table.
When I play, I throw 75 - 80% of all hands I get away without betting at all. You have to have the discipline to resist seeing those extra cards. You need to have a feel for when your good cards are not good enough. If you play poker as the game of testosterone most people think it is, you won't last very long.

It seems like my TryCon troubles will start even before taking off this year. I was playing DDR on my home pad setup and accidentally hit one foot on the big toe of the other. This hurt a bit, but I didn't think much of it until I noticed this:
![[Dance Dance Revolution, the bloodsport]](http://hawknest.stacken.kth.se:8080/images/bloodyddr-thumb.jpg)
(click for full image (143 K))
I had almost pried the toenail on my big toe loose. I hope this isn't more serious than a few days of soreness, but I may not be able to play any DDR at TryCon. This is a bit of a downer, since I was planning to show off the Para Para Mecha Max DDR steps and my M4D SKILLZ at Doubles - I had passed Sakura Doubles Heavy earlier in this session,

While I'm waiting for spare parts for my metal DDR pad, I've been taping down two softpads and trying double mode. There are also two insane guys about an hour and a half away from Stockholm where I live who bought their own DDR machine. While they do want money for playing, the machine is on Joint Premium (that is, you can play Doubles for 1 credit). To sum it up, I've been playing Double a lot lately, and I'm at the point where I've passed my first 9 footers!
Doubles catas passed:
- PARANOiA (180)
- PARANOiA Dirty Mix
- R3
- The Legend of Max (Standard) - This is much more deserving of a nine than LoM Standard on Single.
- Sakura (Challenge)
- Dance Dance Revolution (Challenge)
- V for Extreme (Challenge)
(And PARANOiA KCET Clean Mix, which doesn't bloody count. It's as undeserving of a nine on Doubles as it is on Single play.)
